The Supreme Soviets were the legislative bodies of the USSR. Nikolai Nikolaevich Bogolyubov (1909-1992), a Russian-born and Ukrainian-educated mathematician and physicist was Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) from 1965-1988. He was a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and recieved many awards for his work. Mstislav Vsevolodovich Keldysh (1911-1978), a Russian mathematician and engineer, received many awards for his work on the Russian space program. From 1961, he was Chairman of the Soviet Academy of Sciences for 14 years.
