Caption: Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (1869-1916, centre), Russian mystic. He is flanked by two Russian soldiers: Prince Mikhail Sergeyevich Putyatin (left) and Colonel D. Loman (right). Rasputin, born in Siberia, was a wandering mystic and healer who rose to power in Imperial Russia by gaining the confidence of the royal family by acting as healer to their son. However, Rasputin became involved in the political struggles between monarchist, anti-monarchist, revolutionary and other political forces, and, in 1916, was assassinated in St Petersburg. Photographed in 1910, in St Petersburg, Russia.
