From left to right: Nikolai Nilovich Burdenko (1876-1946), surgeon and neurologist; Alexei Ivanovich Abrikosov (1875-1955), pathologist and anatomist; Petr Aleksandrovich Gertsen (1871-1947), surgeon and oncologist; and Maxim Petrovich Konchalovsky (1875-1942), therapist. Burdenko founded Soviet neurosurgery (brain surgery), while Gertsen founded Soviet clinical oncology (cancer care). This photograph is from the archives of the Moscow Gertsen Oncology Research Institute.
