Caption: J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967, left) and John Von Neumann (1903-1957, right), US physicists. Oppenheimer and Von Neumann were two of the principal members of the Manhattan Project. This project, which started in 1942, involved designing, constructing and testing the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer was nominated director of the Manhattan Project in 1943. The Hungarian-American mathematician Von Neumann was an expert in hydrodynamics, whose knowledge led to the design of the implosion device used in the plutonium bomb.
