Caption: Emil Abderhalden. Portrait of Emil Abderhalden (1877-1950), German biochemist. Abderhalden was made a professor at Berlin in 1904, at Halle in 1911 and also at Zurich, Switzerland, in 1947. He worked with Emil Fischer on the synthesis of amino acids and peptides. This research led to the first synthesis of a protein-like polypeptide molecule in 1907 which contained 18 amino acids. Much of Abderhalden's later work was on dietary metabolism and biochemical methods.
