Thomas Andrews. Portrait of Thomas Andrews, Brit- ish engineer & chief designer of the Titanic liner. Andrews was the managing director of Harland and Wolff, the company that built the Titanic in Liver- pool, England. The Titanic was 262 m long & weighed 67,000 tonnes, making it bigger than any previous ship. Its hull had 16 watertight compartments & would still float if four of these were flooded. Many people thought that it was unsinkable. During the Titanic's first voyage it struck an iceberg on 14 April 1912. Five compartments were punctured and the ship sank in three hours. Andrews' design did not provide enough lifeboats for everybody and he was amongst the 1503 victims.
