Caption: Aristotle. Coloured historical engraving of the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BC). Aristotle went to study at Plato's Academy in Athens when he was 18 years old. In 342 BC he was invited by Philip of Macedon to educate his son Alexander, later Alexander the Great. Later Aristotle became a public teacher, lecturing on most of the beliefs of science, logic and ethics of his day. For this purpose he opened his own school, known as the Lyceum, in 335 BC. His teachings on logic provided the philosophical basis of science which proved dominant for 18 centuries. Engraving from Thomas Stanley's History of Philosophy (1687).
