Caption: Anders Angstrom (1814-1874), Swedish physicist. Angstrom studied the spectrum of the Sun, and believed that it contained hydrogen. He noted that hot gases emit wavelengths of light that they absorb when cold. He measured the wavelengths of around 1000 Fraunhofer lines (dark lines in the Sun's spectrum). A unit of wavelength (the Angstrom: one tenth of a nanometre) is named after him. He also studied heat and magnetism.
