Caption: Sir Edward Victor Appleton (1892-1965), British physicist and Nobel laureate. Appleton was educated at Cambridge University and served in the First World War. He then worked in Cambridge and London. After World War II, he worked in Edinburgh. Appleton was awarded the 1947 Nobel Prize for Physics. The Nobel was awarded for Appleton's studies of the atmosphere and his discovery of what is called the Appleton layer, a layer of charged particles in the atmosphere that reflects radio waves. Apppleton carried out these experiments in the period 1924-1926 using BBC broadcasting equipment. He was knighted in 1941.
