Caption: Kurt Alder (1902 - 1958), German chemist. Alder studied under and later worked with Otto Diels. In 1950, the two chemists received a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discovery and development of diene synthesis or the Diels-Alder reaction. The discovery is used in synthesizing cyclic organic compounds. Alder also discovered the ene reaction in 1943, similar to diene synthesis.
