Caption: Anatoly Petrovich Alexandrov (1903-1994), Soviet engineer. Alexandrov was head of the Kurchatov Institute, the leading nuclear energy research centre in the USSR. He promoted the use of nuclear reactors like those used in Chernobyl. From 1959 to 1986, he was President of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, in 1980. This was six years before the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, which led to the Soviet nuclear energy program being reviewed and suspended.
