Caption: Zhores Ivanovich Alferov (born 1930), Russian physicist. Alferov was born in Belarus and educated in Leningrad. Since 1953 he has worked in the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St Petersburg, directing it since 1970. Alferov specialises in semiconductor physics. Since 1995, he has been a member of the Russian parliament. In 2000, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on semiconductors. He is a Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Photographed in 2001, in Moscow, Russia.
