Caption: Viktor Amazaspovich Ambartsumian (1908-1996), Soviet astrophysicist and astronomer. Ambartsumian was one of the founders of theoretical astrophysics. He worked on the theoretical physics and mathematics of stars, nebulae and galaxies. In 1946 he founded Byurakan Observatory in Armenia. He was a Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and his awards included Hero of Socialist Labour, and National Hero of Armenia, as well as many international honours. Photographed in 1972, in Russia.
