Caption: Vladimir Igorevich Arnold (born 1937), Soviet mathematician, in a university lecture room. Arnold's work includes the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theorem in classical mechanics, catastrophe theory, topology, algebraic geometry, and singularity theory. One of his first results was solving Hilbert's thirteenth problem. Arnold's honours include the Lenin Prize (1965) and the Crafoord Prize (1982). In 1990, he was elected to the USSR Academy of Sciences. He is a Professor at Moscow's Lomonosov State University. Photographed in 1985, in Moscow, Russia.
