Caption: Nikolai Amosov (1913-2002), Soviet heart surgeon and author, resting his head in his hands. Amosov invented surgical procedures to treat heart defects, and also wrote a popular book Thoughts on Health (1965). He was a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, and received many awards, including two Orders of Lenin. Photographed in 1973, in Kiev, Ukraine.
