Caption: Marilyne Andersen (born 1974), Swiss physics engineer, standing behind the MIT HelioDome. Andersen is Professor of Building Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. She is also head of the MIT Daylighting Lab. This department researches methods of increasing the use of natural daylight in offices and homes using light redirection and advanced windows and shades. By making more use of natural daylight, it is estimated that energy consumption by electric lights in a typical American office could be reduced by 20 to 80 percent. The MIT HelioDome is a light measuring device, known as a goniophotometer, that can detect light reflected from a sample from multiple angles. Photographed in 2007.
