Caption: Portrait of Vilhelm Bjerknes (1862-1951), Norwegian meteorologist and pioneer of dynamical meteorology. Bjerknes' father was a professor of mathematics. Bjerknes himself held professorships at Stockholm and Leipzig. In 1904, he demonstrated the use of mathematical models in the prediction of weather. During World War 1, he and his sons did the field research upon which was based the theory of polar fronts (Bergen frontal theory). This explained how cyclonic systems were generated over the Atlantic Ocean where warm and cold air masses meet. This hydrodynamic approach was the basis of modern climate theory. In 1917, Bjerknes founded the Bergen Geophysical Institute.
