Caption: Portrait of American scientist Dr Jeffrey L. Bada. He is principal investigator of a research team at Scripps Institution of Oceanography studying the origin of life on Earth from extraterrestrial sources. Dr. Bada holds a 50,000 year old chunk of ice recovered from the Allen Hills region in Antarctica. From polar ice, these scientists are studying amino acids known to occur in meteorites, comets and living organisms. Extraterrestrial organic matter is being evaluated as a source of molecules necessary to start life on Earth. It has been proposed that comets scattered organic mole- cules, including amino acids, into the Earth's early atmosphere & that this may have seeded life.
