Caption: Portrait of the Canadian nuclear physicist Harriet Brooks (1876-1933). According to the New Zealand- British physicist Sir Ernest Rutherford, Harriet Brooks was, next to madame Curie, the most eminent woman physicist working in radioactivity. She discovered the radioactive recoil (the motion acquired by an atom due to its emission of a particle), and showed that the emanation from radioactive elements was a gas (radon).
