Caption: Napoleon I and beet sugar. Engraving depicting Napoleon Bonaparte (left) inspecting loaves of beet sugar. Napoleon had provided a prize for the replacement of cane sugar, the supply of which was blockaded by the Royal Navy. The best alternative was sugar beet, a source which is still used today. A man with an eye for meticulous detail, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a gifted civil administrator and social reformer who took an interest in many problems. His skills as a military commander are legendary; with his abilities in government taken into account he must be regarded as one of the finest leaders in history.
