Caption: Portrait of Dr C.K. (Bob) Brain, South African palaeoanthropologist, seen here with his dog in the Swartkrans cave near Johannesburg, South Africa. The site was found by Robert Broom in 1948-51 and consisted of a large quantity of fossil bones, mostly animal and some human. The bones were sited as evidence by Raymond Dart of the predatory, and blood thirsty transition from ape to man. Dr Brain's research showed that man was the hunted and not the hunter as suggested by the bones found at the site. Two small holes are seen in the hominid fossil skullcap (left foreground) which match the bite of the canine teeth of the fossilised leopard's jaw beneath it.
