Caption: Robert Ballard, American marine scientist and founder of the JASON Project. Ballard discovered the sunken wreck of the Titanic in 1989. Thousands of letters from curious schoolchildren prompted Ballard to start the JASON Project. Its aim is to introduce live science to children by satellite video links between schools and scientists in the field. Ballard is a distinguished scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, USA. He has published research papers and popular articles and been involved in numerous television programs. In this composite portrait, he is seen in front of an active lava flow photographed on the coast of Hawaii during the 1995 JASON expedition.
