Caption: William Bowman. Portrait of Sir William Bowman (1816-92), British physiologist and pioneering eye surgeon. Early in his career Bowman studied the fine structure of muscle. He also studied the physiology of the kidney and discovered Bowman's Capsules, structures which strain fluid from blood during the production of urine. After an appointment to the Royal Ophthalmic Hospital, London, he worked exclusively on the structure and diseases of the eye. Bowman made advances in eye surgery, perfecting techniques for the removal of part of the iris (iridectomy) and cataracts.
