Credit: VOLKER STEGER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Caption: Bruce Blumberg with a screen display from the interactive computer system SheepDog: Trial by Eire. Blumberg is head of the Synthetic Characters Group of the Media Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. His group is working on understanding the nature of intelligent behaviour. They develop animated characters that can respond to their environment, and then compare their behaviour with models of animal behaviour. An autonomous animated dog, named Duncan (brown, centre), responds to voice commands and can be trained to herd sheep. These are also autonomous characters within the animation environment.
