Caption: Sydney Brenner (born 1927), South African-British molecular biologist, lecturing at the laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, England in 1983. Brenner rapidly gained qualifications in both medicine and biology before beginning research in molecular biology. From 1963 he was part of a world-wide project to decode the genome (genetic blueprint) of the nematode worm, which was seen as a dry run to mapping the human genome. Brenner was awarded the 2002 Nobel prize for Physiology and Medicine for his work.
