Caption: Bell's telephone sketch. Drawing made by Alexander Graham Bell of his design for a telephone, comprising a mouthpiece (into which the user is speaking) and a speaker (centre right). Bell made the sketch in 1876, and his diagram reached the patent office just a few hours before the very similar telephone scheme of Elisha Gray. For Gray's sketch, see image H407/298.
