Caption: Charles Edouard Brown-Sequard (1817-1894), French physiologist and neurologist. Brown-Sequard studied medicine in Paris. He became professor of physiology and pathology at Harvard and subsequently taught in New York, London and Paris. He is best known for his experiments on hormone secretions. He demonstrated the connection between excision of the adrenal gland and Addison's disease. He also worked on the spinal cord and discovered Brown-Sequard syndrome (crossed hemiplegia). He worked with various hormones, but his claim to have reversed his own ageing by injecting himself with dog testicular extracts is no longer accepted.
