Caption: Mary E. Britton (1855-1925), US medical pioneer. Britton graduated from the American Missionary College in Chicago, USA, and worked as a doctor from her home in Lexington, Kentucky, USA, in her specialities of hydrotherapy and electrotherapy. She was officially granted a license to practice medicine in 1902. Britton was the first licensed female doctor in Kentucky, and one of the first African-American doctors. She was active in campaigning for more rights for African-Americans and women. She retired in 1923. Artwork published c.1893 in Noted Negro Women: their triumphs and activities.
