Caption: Luther Burbank (1849-1926), American horticulturalist and botanist. Over the course of his career, Burbank created over 800 new strains of flowers, vegetables and fruits by selective breeding. After developing the commercially successful 'Burbank potato' in the 1870s, he was able to purchase some land in California where he continued his work for the next 50 years. Although well-versed in scientific literature, he was motivated by results rather than records, and was sometimes criticised by his contemporaries for his unscientific approach. This portrait was taken in 1909.
