After taking over his family's business Browning became a leading maker of scientific instruments, particularly microscopes and telescopes. As Optical and Physical Instrument Maker to Her Majesty's Government, he supplied the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. He also wrote numerous articles on his craft.
