Caption: Major-General Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane (1773-1860), Scottish soldier and astronomer. Brisbane had a distinguished career in the British army, serving under the Duke of Wellington, and becoming Governor of New South Wales in 1821. However, he never lost the interest in astronomy he developed as a student in Edinburgh, and built observatories at his ancestral home and his wife's estate in Scotland, and near Sydney in Australia. His research won him the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1828, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Keith Prize in 1848. He was elected president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1849.
