Caption: John Bahcall (December 30, 1934-August 17, 2005), astrophysist. Bahcall was instrumental in establishing the Standard Solar Model (SSM), which represents our best understanding of the sun's composition and processes. The subsequent discovery that fewer neutrinos were expelled by the sun than the model actually predicted became the basis for his pioneering work with physical chemist Raymond Davis, Jr. on the ''solar neutrino problem.'' Bahcall was instrumental in the development of the Hubble Space Telescope.
