Caption: Alexander Mikhailovich Butlerov (1828-1886), Russian chemist. From 1857, Butlerov worked on the newly proposed model of chemical structure, with atoms with fixed valencies (the number of bonded neighbour atoms each atom has) held together by single or multiple bonds to form molecules. He was the first to use double bonds in structural formulae. He also published papers on the oxidation of organic compounds and studied polymerization reactions. Artwork from 1880.
