Caption: Leonid Maximovich Brekhovskikh (1917-2005), Soviet oceanographer, at his desk. A piece of coral is at lower left. Brekhovskikh's major work was on the study of acoustic waves underwater, allowing improved study of the oceans and the seabed. He was a Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and Chairman of its Oceanographic Commission. He was also Editor-in-chief of the journal Oceanology. His awards included three Orders of Lenin and Hero of Socialist Labour. Photographed in 1975, in Russia.
