Caption: Robert Chambers. Portrait of Robert Chambers (1802-71), Scottish naturalist and writer. He initially contributed to Chamber's Edinburgh Journal which had been started by his brother, William. The brothers began publishing reference books in 1832. In 1844 Robert Chambers anonymously published Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation. He suggested that animals evolved according to a divine programme through a progressive modification of species. He proposed that the origin of life was due to chemical- electric processes. The book lacked evidence but was popular with the public. Darwin believed that it had prepared opinion for his Origin of Species.
