Caption: Pierre Curie. Portrait of Nobel Prize-winning French physicist Pierre Curie (1859-1906), taken in 1904. Pierre Curie studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, where he became an assistant teacher. With his brother he discovered the piezoelectric effect in crystals. In 1895 he married Polish- French physicist Marie Sklodowska and together they embarked on joint research into the newly discovered phenomenon of radioactivity. Although sometimes dangerous, their work was highly successful: they discovered two new elements (polonium and radium), and jointly won the 1903 Nobel Prize for physics for their work on radio- activity. Pierre Curie died in a road accident.
