Caption: Mustafa Chahine. Portrait of planetary scientist Mustafa Chahine seen in front of images of Earth (blue/black), Venus (light brown) & Mars (orange). Chahine works at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, USA, where he studies the atmospheric evolution of these planets. They all have appreciable amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) in their atmospheres. CO2 is fixed by the formation of silicate rocks. However it must be returned to the atmosphere for life to have the chance of developing. Earth has abundant life, unlike Mars and Venus, partly due to this CO2 recycling by volcanoes and oceans. Photographed in 1997.
