Caption: Julius Caesar. Historical artwork of a bust of the Roman soldier and statesman (Gaius) Julius Caesar (circa 101-44 BC). An early military and political career culminated, in 60 BC, with a political coalition (the First Triumvirate) with Pompey and Crassus. This led to his election as consul of the Roman Senate. In 58 BC, he led the decisive conquest of Gaul (France) and in 54 BC he led an expedition to Britain. In 49 BC, civil war erupted between him and Pompey. Caesar triumphed, quelled rebellions in the Empire and went on to establish himself as dictator. His new Julian calendar used leap days and is the basis of today's Gregorian calendar. He was assassinated in 44 BC.
