Caption: Supermilk researcher Philip Calder holding a glass of milk enriched in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Calder is head of a research group at Southampton University, England, that is investigating the health benefits of CLA. In collaboration with scientists at Reading University, Calder's group are testing whether CLA supplements enhance the human immune system. As well as helping the body to fight bacterial infections, previous research suggests that CLA can act as an anti-cancer agent, by stimulating the immune system to destroy tumours. If its health benefits are proven, CLA levels in milk and other dairy products could be enriched.
