Caption: Rene Caillie (1799-1838), French explorer. Caillie was the first European to visit the town of Timbuktu (in present-day Mali) and return alive. He achieved this by dressing like a local. Timbuktu was famed for its wealth, but by the 19th century, when Caillie saw it, it had declined greatly from its peak of several decades past. His exploits earned him 10,000 Francs from the Geographical Society of Paris.
