Caption: Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), Scottish historian and essayist. Carlyle initially established himself as an expert on German literature, commentating on texts and translating German writers, notably the philosopher and scientist Goethe. His first major work was Sartor Resartus, published in 1833, it was simultaneously factual & fictional, which forced the reader to confront the problem of where "truth" is to be found. This work was later to be seen as an early Existentialist text. In 1837 he published The French Revolution, A History, although the original manuscript was accidentally burnt by the philosopher John Stuart Mill. His other notable work was Heroes and Hero Worship.
