Caption: Francis Crick (1916-2004), British molecular biologist and co- discoverer of the structure of DNA, with his artist wife Odile. Crick moved to Cambridge and took up molecular biology after World War 2. Crick met James Watson in 1951, and they agreed to study the structure of DNA as the basis of the genetic code. Basing their theories on existing work, as well as the crystallography of Wilkins & Franklin, the two announced their 'double helix' structure in 1953. Odile drew the diagram of DNA's structure that accompanied their paper. Crick, Watson and Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Photographed in 2003.
