Caption: Jacques-Yves Cousteau (1910-1997), French diver, explorer and researcher. Cousteau spent his life exploring and studying the sea. He is famous as the co-inventor of the aqualung (1943), underwater breathing equipment used in scuba diving. Other areas of underwater technology that he developed included diving masks, underwater cameras and two small manned submarines. He won many awards for his books and documentaries about the sea. This photograph was taken in Madagascar, as part of an expedition by the Cousteau Society. This was one of Cousteau's last expeditions.
