Caption: Thomas George Cowling (1906-1990), English astronomer. After studying mathematics at the University of Oxford, England, Cowling worked for Edward Milne and Sydney Chapman. He found an error in a paper Chapman had written on the Sun's magnetic field which invalidated the results. Chapman, impressed by the astuteness of his student, invited Cowling to work with him. Cowling advanced his reputation with his studies of sunspots, and later his work on stellar structure. He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1956, and was elected the society's president in 1965. He also won the Bruce Medal in 1985 and the Hughes Medal in 1990, two days before his death.
