Caption: Sir William Henry Mohoney Christie (1845-1922), English astronomer. Christie served as the 8th Astronomer Royal from 1881-1910 and the president of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1888-1890. After studying and teaching at the University of Cambridge, England, he became Chief Assistant at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, London in 1870. When appointed as Astronomer Royal as George Airy's successor, Christie set about bringing the instruments and equipment up-to-date, and extended the buildings. He played a key role in establishing Greenwich as the Prime Meridian in 1884. He was knighted in 1904.
