Caption: The canopy of a date palm (Phoenix dactylifera). The date palm is native to north Africa, but is now grown as a cash crop in many tropical countries. The mature plant is 5 metres tall, with a spread of 3 to 4 metres. The pinnate leaves are generally about 2 metres in length. Dates are the edible fruits of the palm, seen here in clusters just above centre frame.
