Caption: A wood engraving of William Caxton by American artist Bernard Brussel-Smith (1914-1989). Caxton (c1422-1491) was England's first printer and published the first book in English, ''Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye,'' around 1474 in the city of Bruges. He later established a press at Westminster and published England's first book, ''Dictes or Sayengis of the Philosophres.''
