Caption: Russell Henry Chittenden (1856-1943), American biochemist. After studying at Yale, USA and Heidelberg, Germany, Chittenden became professor of physiological chemistry at Yale, the first American biochemistry department. As such, he was influential in establishing biochemistry as a scientific discipline. His work included research into nutrition, and he discovered that health could be sustained by consuming less than half as much protein as previously thought. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s.
