Caption: Leon N. Cooper (born 1930), US physicist, giving a lecture. Cooper studied at Columbia University, New York, USA, receiving his PhD in 1954. Since 1958 he has worked at Brown University, USA. He shared the 1972 Nobel Prize in Physics with Bardeen and Schrieffer for theoretical work he did with them on superconductivity. The theory is known as the BCS superconductivity theory, after their initials. The theory involves electron pairs, which are named Cooper electron pairs in his honour.
