Caption: Artur Chilingarov (born 1939), Russian polar explorer and politician. Chilingarov, of Armenian descent, has worked in both the Arctic and Antarctic. In 2007, he was one of the members of the High-Latitude Arctic Deep-Water Expedition that used submersibles to descend to the seabed at the North Pole and plant the Russian flag there. For this feat, he received the title Hero of the Russian Federation. He has served as Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma (the Russian parliament), and is President of the Russian Polar Travellers' Association. Photographed in 2003, in Moscow, Russia.
